Wet Weekend Leads to a Wet Week

What a weekend I had! I had some fun plans but they were all canceled when I found water seeping into my basement Friday evening. I’ve never had water in my basement, and neither has anyone on my street. But my area has had record rainfall (one area got 5 inches of rain in one day!) which has caused rivers and the lake to flood. The water coming into my house is caused by the water table getting so high.

Thanks to my wonderful friend and her husband, I am able to keep up with the water but it is still coming in. My friend and her husband worked at my house all day Saturday helping me get sump pumps going, removing all my stuff from the basement, sorting it into trash and recycling, and finally bringing it to the dump. I’m so thankful for such wonderful friends!

I’ve had to take some time off from school because I can’t leave the pumps going when I’m away and the water still comes in too quickly. I was able to do half a day today and my mom is on her way up here now. She has volunteered to spend the day here tomorrow so I can go to work for a full day. I’m hoping for things to dry up soon.

I know I’m lucky. Some people have lost homes and have had much worse flooding. The tornadoes in other parts of the country are also so much worse than 2-3 inches of water in my basement. But I’m just so tired of running up and down those stairs and getting up every 30 minutes to check on the pumps. Keep your fingers crossed for dry weather!

Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. golden Sun, please shine down on me!

I really hadn’t considered getting myself an e-reader. I love books. I love the feel of books. I love the smell of books. I like being able to see and feel how much I’ve read and how much I need to go.

But recently I have felt that a couple of books had print that was too small for me to read. I had to work hard to read it. My eye doctor has told me that I need to start thinking about bifocals, but I’m so afraid I’ll have trouble adjusting to them.

That leads me to the e-reader. I know with e-readers you can adjust the size of the font, which would make reading so much more comfortable. My 40th birthday is coming up so I thought it would be a good birthday present to myself. If I were to get an e-reader, I would go with the NOOK because I have a B&N membership, credit card, and the store is close by.

I would love to hear about your experiences with e-readers. Pros, cons. Are they hard to adjust to? Do you miss the feel of a real book?

Thanks and happy new year!

I’m back!

Holy cow, it feels good to be back. The stomach flu has hit my class hard. This past weekend every adult who works in my room, including me, was knocked out with this sickness. I am now feeling much more like myself and getting back on track.

I’m taking some time tonight to update a few things on the blog (currently reading, books read, etc.). Then I’m hoping to curl up with a book for a bit tonight.

I did watch part of the season premier of Lost last night and I finished watching it as soon as I got home from school today. I need some time to think things over and decide which direction my theories for this season will go. Any Lost fans out there? What did you think of the season premier?

I hope everyone stays healthy and avoids the stomach bug. It is not fun!

What’s the best part of my job?

Want to know one of the best parts of my job? Reading aloud to kids and seeing them get excited about books! It really doesn’t get any better than that.

As I mentioned in last week’s Sunday Salon, this year’s first grade class is loving Junie B. Jones more than any other class I’ve had – and I’ve had classes really love those books! On Wednesday we finished Junie B. First Grader at Last. The kids were begging me to start the next one in the series, but it was time for dismissal so we had to wait until the next day. On Thursday we went to our scheduled library time. Just about every kiddo in my class went straight to the Junie B. shelf and checked out a Junie B. Jones book. The kids were so excited! I loved just standing back and watching them discuss their book choices with each other. I can’t wait to see what they choose to take out next week.

Hopefully I’ll get a review or two up during the beginning of next week. I’m out of town this weekend for my nephew’s 9th birthday party! How did he get to be 9 years old already?! We’re going to an indoor soccer park so play soccer, eat pizza, and birthday cake!
