Nan’s Notes: Diamond Willow

diamond willow

From Helen Frost’s (the author) website:
Set in interior Alaska, Diamond Willow tells the story of 12-year-old Willow, a dogmusher, and her lead dog, Roxy. The story is told in diamond-shaped poems in Willow’s voice, with prose sections in the voices of animal characters.
Nan’s Notes: I enjoyed curling up with this book.  I was able to read the entire book is just 2 sittings. The format of the book pulls you right in. The diamond shaped poems read smoothly and quickly. In the center of each poem are bold faced words that are the heart of what Willow is feeling. I am also a dog person, so Willow’s love and devotion for her dog Roxy was something I could genuinely feel. This book is a short, quiet book; however, it tells a story with more heart than many longer books.
I would love to use this book with kids. I think it would be great to pair it up with Sharon Creech’s Love That Dog.
